With all the league games done and dusted and all positions decided, Manx hockey turns its head to finals day this weekend.

The Mixed Under-16, Mixed Cup and Mixed Plate finals all take centre stage at the National Sports Centre on Saturday.

The first of the day is the Mixed U16 final which sees Vikings A and Vikings B go head-to-head. In the group stage of the competition last weekend, both teams topped their respective groups and remained undefeated. Neither team goes into this final as favourites in what will be a close game.

This is the first year of the under-16 competition and to have the youngsters involved in the mixed season’s blue ribbon event is a great experience for them.

Next up is the MHA Mixed Plate Final which sees two sides who fought for the Mixed Division One title take on each other again in what will be a tough game for both sides.

Vikings B, the Division One title winners, take on Valkyrs B who narrowly missed out on second place in the league and, if the previous games are anything to go by, it will be a competitive and edgy affair.

The last time the two met Vikings quickly took a 4-0 lead, only to see Valkyrs come back at them hard in the second half. The win went Vikings’ way, but Valkyrs were unlucky not to earn something more with their second half display. Although Vikings B go into this game as slight favourites, there is the feeling that as the season has gone on Valkyrs have become stronger and stronger, and they boast a vastly-experienced side.

That said, Vikings have a great blend of experience and youth in their side and will hope to use this to their advantage.

The last game of the day is the MHA Mixed Cup Final. The semi-final due to be played on Tuesday night was forfeited by Valkyrs late at the 11th hour when the Ramsey players were either travelling to or already in Douglas. This means that Ramsey found their way into the final without having to play the team that has arguably been their closest competitor this season.

Vikings faced a much sterner test in their semi-final against Bacchas A in a game they won 2-1 and clearly go into this game as favourites, having beaten Ramsey twice this season in the league.

Although Ramsey will not simply lie down, it will be a tough ask to come away with the win. Vikings must remain focused as a quick look at their results against Ramsey shows the northerners can compete against Vikings if they are on the top of their game.
