The Isle of Man FA’s senior men’s team’s busy pre-season schedule continues at the Bowl on Saturday with a game against National League North side Altrincham.
Paul Jones’s hosts head into the 5pm game unbeaten after a win against the Duke of Lancaster Regiment and a draw with Welsh Cup winners Connah’s Quay Nomads.
Visitors Alty too are in good form as manager Phil Parkinson gears his squad up for a return to the National League North after winning the Northern Premier League last season.
The 17-man travelling party is an experienced one with many having started their careers in the academies of football league sides.
A couple to watch out for are last season’s top scorer Jordan Hulme and fellow attacker James Poole who won the FA Youth Cup with Manchester City in 2008.
Jones is using Saturday’s friendly, and those to follow against Welsh outfits Bangor and Rhyl, to shape his squad ahead of the 2018-19 season, a campaign that culminates with an inter-island tournament in Anglesey.
As a result the former Rushen United boss has once again shuffled his pack for the weekend’s encounter, putting together a match-day 22 that includes some new faces as well as some of the more experienced heads that have served the representative side so well in the past.
Dean Kearns and Corinthians’ Adam Killey will share the goalkeeping duties, with Matt Quirk and Sam Holliday having also featured between the sticks in this summer’s previous matches.
Among the newcomers in the squad are Rushen pair Charlie Jackson and Harry Best, plus Peel duo Matty Skillicorn and young frontman Billy Kennaugh.
St Mary’s versatile Connor Birch also will get a chance to impress as Jones and his coaching team continue to run the rule over a training squad that has numbered 40 this summer.
Returning to the fold is Chris Bass Jr who joins Alex Harrison, Sam Caine, Jack McVey and Matthew Woods among the this weekend’s squad’s more experienced stagers.
The visitors will have a little inside knowledge ahead of the game with island-based former Douglas and District player and manager Lawrence Looney appointed to the club’s board in March, after a spell as chief executive of Lancaster City.
FA squad: Dean Kearns, Adam Killey, Connor Birch, Alex Harrison, Cam Lee, Alex Maitland, Tom Smith, Chris Bass Jr, Sam Caine, Joe Morling, Matthew Skillicorn, Josh Thomas, Harry Best, Charlie Jackson, Jack McVey, Joe Quayle, Ste Riding, Matthew Woods, Rhys Oates, Furo Davies, Sean Doyle, Billy Kennaugh.
