Corinthians and Ayre United are both well-represented in the latest Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week.
The Whites and the Tangerines each have three players in the hypothetical XI, while reigning champions St Mary’s and Laxey both have two in the selection.
Claiming the number one jersey in the latest TotW is Ayre custodian Christian Penswick who caught the eye of Eric Clague’s player ratings panel with a fine showing during the northerners’ impressive 2-1 victory away at Peel.
Also shining at Douglas Road was Tangerines defender Jamie Callister who subsequently takes his place in a traditional back four alongside St Mary’s star Karl Clark, Laxey’s Dave Reynolds and Corinthians’ Chris Cannell.
Clark helped reigning champions St Mary’s claim a hard-fought 5-2 victory away at Douglas Royal, a result which sealed the Saints’ place in the semi-finals of this season’s Railway Cup.
Reynolds and Cannell impressed at both ends of the pitch for their respective sides over the weekend, the former scoring in a 3-0 win for Laxey over Ramsey while the latter grabbed a goal during Corinthians’ 10-2 rout at Douglas Athletic as the Whites continue to set the pace at the top of the table.
The other Laxey player to shine on Saturday was Sean Gavin who took the plaudits following a good display for the Miners and he lines up in a four-man midfield.
Joining him in the centre of the park are former Laxey team-mate and current Ayre star Shaun Kelly, St Mary’s man Sammy Gelling and St George’s talent Cian Geoghegan.
Kelly was the hero for the Tangerines as he ran the show at Douglas Road to ensure the northerners just about remain in contention for a surprise Railway Cup spot, while Gelling impressed for St Mary’s during their aforementioned win at Ballafletcher.
Geoghegan helped Geordies move to within one point of the December competition with a strong performance as the Saints edged past bottom-of-the-table St John’s at Glencrutchery Road.
There’s a distinct Corinthians feel to the latest Team of the Week attack as the two-man frontline features Whites’ stars Stephen Whitley and Sean Doyle.
Both players helped themselves to hat-tricks during their 10-2 victory over Douglas Athletic at Springfield Road - including two in two minutes for Doyle - while Whitley’s all-round performance resulted in him being named as the player of the day.
