The new Canada Life Premier League campaign maybe less than a week old, but the top-flight’s big games keep coming.

After narrowly losing to Old Firm rivals Rushen United on Saturday, Peel face another stern early season test this weekend when they travel to St Mary’s.

Although only a couple of games into the season, another defeat at the Bowl would leave the westerners playing catch up with the division’s other title contenders.

Peel looked good in spells against Rushen, especially in the first half, and will be encouraged by the performance if not the result.

St Mary’s began their campaign under new manager Brian Carney with a solid 5-1 win over Colby.

Peel will provide a much sterner test, but with club stalwarts Steven Priestnal and Brian Crellin in form they are capabale of claiming at least a point.

Four of the teams tipped to feature in the division’s bottom spots go head-to-head on Saturday.

Chris Feeney’s managerial debut at Douglas Royal didn’t quite go to plan as his new side were beaten 4-1 by Ramsey at Ballafletcher and had Chris Anderson sent off.

The latter will be suspened as last season’s Division Two runners-up host fellow relegation candidates Colby this weekend.

The pair will know games against the teams around them will shape their season and three points in this one would provide a welcome shot in the arm.

Royal’s fellow promoted side Braddan travel to Ramsey in the other match-up of the likely strugglers.

The latter, however, impressed at Royal last week and will be keen for a repeat result to give them six points, nearly half of the total 0f 14 it took them all last season to accrue.

Laxey host Corinthians and Douglas Athletic entertain St George’s in the day’s other two CLPL games.

It’s fixtures like this Saturday’s that the Whites will have to win if they are to emerge as geninue title contenders. Laxey’s youngsters will give it a go, but expect Corinthians to pick up the points.

Athletic shipped 23 goals against Geordies in the pair’s four meetings last season so you’d have to favour the Saints for the win in this one.
