The second division is well represented in the latest installment of Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week.

The hypothetical XI returns in the guise of an FA Cup special after the delayed ECAP-sponsored competition finally got underway at the weekend.

There were several good preliminary round ties, but the standout clash arguably took place at the Bowl where St Mary’s edged past Peel thanks to Sammy Gelling’s injury-time winner.

As such, the Saints winger takes his place in the latest TotW after starring for his side even prior to netting that 91st-minute strike which sealed a dramatic 4-3 win.

Gelling takes his place in a four-man midfield alongside his Douglas Royal namesake Sam Baines as well as DHSOB’s Jay Whyte and Laxey’s Darryl Haslett.

There was certainly no shortage of goals last Saturday and grabbing a hat-trick apiece were Baines and Haslett who starred during their sides’ respective wins over Colby and St John’s.

Elsewhere, Whyte began the day in midfield for Old Boys before later dropping deeper into the back four as, together with Robbie Ward, he helped his side overcome a weakened Ayre United.

Claiming the goalkeeping gloves in the latest selection is Colby shot-stopper Jim Gale who, despite ending up on the losing side against Royal, was in superb form at the Station Fields and prevented a much bigger margin of victory for the Whites.

Lining up in a traditional four-man defence in front of goal are two more Division Two players, namely Nick Clague and Matthew Lane, who join Andrew Crennell and Stewart Smith in the backline.

Clague and Lane shone for Gymns and Castletown respectively as they got the better of Douglas and District plus Pulrose United to ensure their seasons continued into June.

Smith stood out at the back for Corinthians as the Whites - the favourites to win this year’s competition - were made to work hard for their 3-0 victory over 10-man Onchan at the Nivison Stadium, while Crennell starred for Peel as helped himself to a brace of assists at the national stadium and was perhaps unlucky to end up on the losing side.

The high-scoring theme of the day is clearly evident in the two-man frontline as the duo in question netted a whopping 11 goals between them on Saturday.

Nathan Cardy enhanced his burgeoning reputation as one of the leading stars of the future as he grabbed a five-goal haul for St George’s during their 13-0 hammering of Governor’s Athletic.

Going one better - and taking his seasonal tally to an amazing 60 goals in all competitions- was Foxdale star Jay Chatwood who bagged a double hat-trick for the Billy Goat Park as his side thumped Michael United 13-4 at Balleira Road to set up a first round tie with fellow Division Two side Gymns this weekend.

As such, Chatwood was named as the ECAP Player of the Round and picked up an award from Ste Corran of the sponsor.
