Colby caused one of the biggest shocks in recent years when they defeated the most successful team in Manx women’s football on Sunday.

The Moonlighters thumped Douglas Royal 8-1 at Station Fields in the Nedbank-sponsored Women’s League. The southerners had not beaten the Ballafletcher side in all of their previous meetings and it was the manner in which Colby won that has the local women’s fraternity talking.

While Royal were without their captain Kym Hicklin and a regular goalkeeper, they still fielded a team of multiple trophy winners and players having presented the Isle of Man.

Colby had the goalscoring Midas touch though, as everything that touched the net turned to goals.

Caitlin Smith (5), Amy Speed (2) and Megan Hall scored for the Arbory side, while Kayleigh Georgeson netted the visitors’ consolation. Royal’s cause wasn’t helped when a player walked off the pitch midway through the second half.

In the other women’s match, Peel kept their title ambitions alive with a 10-0 victory over DHSOB. Leading 3-0 at the break, Becky Corkish (3), Sarah Taylor (2), Kira Buchan (2), Eleanor Gawne, Maxine Smalley and Chloe Gale netted for the westerners.

The match involving Corinthians against Douglas Athletic was postponed as Athletic couldn’t field a team.
