Corinthians will now be looking to redesign their honours’ board at Ballafletcher come the end of the season.

With Manx football resuming on Saturday, the Whites are on course to add the Premier League and Combination One titles in 2021, two trophies that have so far remained elusive in the club’s 90-year history.

The former gathered more momentum at the weekend when they beat their nearest title challengers Rushen United 6-3 at Ballafletcher despite the Whites trailing 0 -2 and 1-3 against the Spaniards.

Sitting seven points behind heading into the game, Rushen had to win to stay in contention and got off to the perfect start with only two minutes played.

Following a throw-in, Furo Davies collected and shielded the ball before rolling it onto Jack Camarda’s path who smashed the shot with venom which bustled into the net.

Although Corinthians started to enjoy swathes of possession in the opening half, Rushen hit the hosts on the counter-attack which was reflected in their second goal. Mike Williams’ superb pass picked out Jamie Johnston who rounded goalkeeper Matthew Quirk before stroking the ball into the net.

Just after the half-hour mark though, Corinthians got on the scoresheet. Via a goal-kick, Sean Doyle flicked the ball over his head into Dan Simpson’s onrushing path and he duly placed a shot into the bottom left to make it 2-1.

But within two minutes the southerners had restored their two-goal cushion. After Quirk superbly saved Camarda’s free-kick at the expense of a corner, the set-piece was only half-cleared and Camarda pounced to drill home a low shot into the bottom right.

Just before half-time, Corinthians pulled another goal back which was pivotal, providing a much-needed platform entering the second half. Recycling play onto the left, Chris Cannell crossed for Simpson to head home.

The Whites approached the second half with intensity, Murray driving a shot wide followed by two searching passes into the penalty area but no-one could connect.

Corinthians continually found more space along their right flank, culminating in their equaliser when Stephen Whitley embarked on a brilliant run from inside his own half, exchanging passes before his cross was spilled for Murray to poke home the leveller.

Four minutes later, Corinthians took the lead for their first time. Whitley again went on another brilliant run along the right and his low, searching pass into the box found Doyle whose close-range effort hit the left stanchion before nestling into the onion bag.

Quirk was then called into action at the other end of the pitch, saving Camarda’s impressive shot, but Corinthians continued to press and extended their lead on 83 minutes.

Yet again Whitley was involved after forcing a save from goalkeeper Dean Kearns and, rather than to go for another shot, crossed to Murray to set up Doyle who duly tapped home an easy chance.

In added time, Corinthians wrapped up a memorable and comprehensive victory.

Whitley and Murray exchanged passes on the edge of the opposition penalty area before the former set up Danny Gerrard who curled a shot into the bottom right.

Corinthians’ next four fixtures include three teams in the relegation mix - I wouldn’t be surprised if the trophy polish and Champagne are already on order.
