The opening round of the Friends Provident FA Cup has pitted Old Firm rivals Peel and Rushen United against each other.

The draw for the preliminary round was held over the weekend and has thrown up several interesting clashes.

Peel and Rushen will go head-to-head once again at Douglas Road where the Spaniards will be hoping to avenge their last-gasp 2-1 defeat to the westerners in the league a few weeks ago.

Away from the Old Firm clash, there’s also a southern derby taking place at Clagh Vane where Malew host rivals Castletown in an all-JCK Division Two affair.

St George’s will begin their defence of their trophy with a short trip to the Nivison Stadium where they face second division high fliers Onchan. The sides last met in the Hospital Cup in April 2016 when Geordies ran out 9-0 winners.

Premier League pacesetters Corinthians will be expected to comfortably see off the challenge of Division Two’s Governor’s Athletic at Bemahague while St John’s will start as favourites against Douglas and District at Mullen-e-Cloie.

An interesting battle could be in store at Billy Goat Park where Division Two title and promotion hopefuls take on Premier League newcomers Braddan in a match which could go either way.

Second division frontrunners Pulrose United will take their swashbuckling, free-scoring football back to Garey Mooar where they face a Union Mills side they beat 5-3 earlier this season, while Springfield Road sees Douglas Athletic host Railway Cup hopefuls DHSOB.

Marown may just fancy their chances of pulling off a cupset when they host inconsistent first division side St Mary’s in Crosby, while the final game could go either way between Division Two strugglers Gymns and Michael United in Tromode.

Ties to be played on Saturday, January 6.
