One of the Canada Life Premier League’s two remaining 100 per cent records came to an end on Saturday afternoon at the Bowl.
Early pacesetters Corinthians and reigning champions St George’s both had won all of their games going into this weekend, but Geordies’ run is the only one that remains intact after Peel beat the Whites 3-2.
Youngster Billy Kennaugh charged down an attempted Corinthians’ clearance to give the westerners a ninth-minute lead in the match that was switched to the Bowl after water-logging at Ballafletcher.
With both teams wasteful in possession it wasn’t until the start of the second period that the next goal went in.
Again Peel cashed in on a mistake in the Whites’ defence when keeper Adam Killey spilled Daniel Bell’s through-ball in the wet conditions. Lee Gale picked up the pieces, sweeping the loose ball into the empty net to double his side’s lead barely a minute into the second 45.
Substitute Danny Oram pulled one back from the Whites in the 68th minute, but Peel hit back almost instantly when replacement Ryan Holdaway swung in a cross from the right that Shaun Kelly buried with a header.
Corinthians pressed in the final 15 minutes, forcing Peel keeper Owen Dawson into a number of saves, but Stephen Whitley injury time volley was all they had to show for their efforts.
The match at the national stadium was one of only a handful to go ahead as 19 were wiped out by the day’s wind and rain.
In JCK Division Two, RYCOB made the trip south to Malew worthwhile as they won 8-1 to return back to the top of the second-tier standings.
Castletown were the day’s other winners beating Ayre United 4-1 at the Stadium.
There were two games in combination football, Rushen beat Douglas Royal 6-0 to go top of Canada Life Combination One.
In Combination Two Union Mills edged past Douglas and District 5-3 at Noble’s Park.
