The destination of this season’s Canada Life Premier League title should be a little clearer by teatime on Saturday.
The top-flight’s current top two go head-to-head this weekend as St Mary’s host Peel at the Bowl.
Steve Falconer’s westerners currently head the standings by three points, but having played one game more than the Saints.
Alex Harrison’s charges are, in turn, five points clear of reigning champions St George’s meaning, with half a dozen games to go, the dash for the CLPL trophy is pretty much a two-horse race.
Peel won the reverse fixture 2-1 back in October at Douglas Road, inflicting St Mary’s only league defeat in the process.
For most of that game though the Saints had to play with 10 men after player-manager Harrison was sent off.
Another tight game should be on the cards this weekend at the national stadium, if both clubs are able to field their strongest sides.
St Mary’s were at near full strength for last week’s FA Cup thumping of Division Two Union Mills although there was one obvious absentee.
Goalkeeper Kiril Velev missed the tie, with outfield players Jordan Cooper and Karl Clark donning the gloves for 45 minutes apiece.
Harrison will be hoping Velev is available to face his former club as neither of the stand-in stoppers were really tested at the weekend.
Peel also warmed up for the fixture with a big cup win, beating fellow Premier League side Marown 8-0.
Experienced centre backs Dominic McGreevy and Luke Doherty both missed that game and Falconer will be hoping to have one if not both back to try and curb a Saints attack that has averaged nearly five goals a game.
A draw at the Bowl would probably suit the hosts when the pair’s remaining games are considered.
The Saints have to play Douglas Athletic, Laxey, Douglas Royal and out-of-sorts DHSOB twice.
Peel also take on Old Boys and DAFC, but have testing games to come against both St George’s and Corinthians.
