There was plenty of drama in Saturday afternoon’s seven Keystone Law Hospital Cup ties.

The majority came at Springfield Road where Division Two Malew agonisingly lost on penalties to top-flight Douglas Athletic after the pair had drawn 4-4 after normal and extra time.

After an even opening, Will Penhallurick headed Athletic ahead in the 13th minute. Cal Alexander’s southerners leveled things up just shy of the half-hour mark though when Josh Clarke’s deflected shot found the back of the net.

The Pinks mustered an almost immediate response when Matty Aire grabbed his first of the match to give his side a slender 2-1 lead at the break.

Malew restored parity three minutes into the second 45 through Ste Collister, but again Athletic re-took the lead when Conor Dempsey made it 3-2 midway through the half.

Four minutes later it was 4-2 when Aire rifled in his second to seemingly put his side on course for victory.

The visitors, however, had other ideas and Clarke’s second direct from a corner made it 4-3 with 10 minutes left on referee Peter Greenhill’s watch.

This set up a grandstand final 10 minutes which culminated in stoppage time when Malew netted a late leveler to send the tie to the additional 30 minutes. Keeper Dean Kinley lumped the ball forward into the Pinks’ box, the unfortunate Lee Ford heading the ball into his own net.

At the start of extra time Malew were reduced to 10 men when winger Kieran Krypner was sent off for a second booking.

Neither side though added to their respective tallies meaning penalties would be required to decide who would make it into the competition’s quarter-finals.

Douglas Athletic made the decision to put centre-back James Aire in goal for the shoot-out in place of Sam Spooner who was deputising for the injured Matty Quirk.

The decision paid off as he saved two of the first five Malew spot-kicks. Misses by the hosts’ Nick Ford and Graham Druggan though meant the pair were locked on 3-3 forcing sudden death.

There was even more drama to come at this stage. Kinley saved Drew Ward’s effort, but in doing so had encroached off his line. This meant he picked up a booking, his second of the match, and he was sent off meaning Malew striker Collister had to take over in goal for the sudden-death kicks.

Both sides rattled in several efforts, but Michael Pardoe’s miss meant that his side exited the competition.

Extra time was also required in Crosby where Marown also avoided a potentially upset at the hands of second-tier RYCOB.

In the end Marown triumphed 3-2 thanks to goals from Cam Avery, Lewis Brew and Matty Davies.

Foxdale did pull off a shock though beating top-flight St John’s 2-1 at Billy Goat Park. On target for John Roberts’s charges were Jay Chatwood and Andy Williamson.

Peel avenged their midweek league defeat at Corinthians with a 3-0 win at Douglas Road.

The Whites had effectively ended the westerners’ hopes of winning the Canada Life Premier League on Tuesday, but the Sunset City side avenged that defeat in front of their home fans.

After a cagey opening, Rhys Oates put the hosts in front right on the stroke of halftime before Shaun Kelly doubled their advantage with a thumping header after the break.

Corinthians briefly rallied late on but Peel wrapped up the win in injury time when Tom Wood fired home in the dying seconds to book his side’s place in the next round.

Elsewhere, DHSOB edged past Ayre United 1-0 in Andreas, while St George’s cruised past Governor’s Athletic 8-0.

Ramsey were the other team to book their place in the next round with an 8-2 victory over Onchan at Ballacloan.
