St George’s wrestled back some of the initiative in the Canada Life Premier League title race on Saturday with a 3-1 win over rivals Peel.
After a cagey start at Glencrutchery Road, the westerners twice went close to opening the scoring through Lee Gale. But Geordies edged in front in the 23rd minute when Ciaran McNulty’s corner was turned into his own net by Daniel Bell, before Chris Bass Jr doubled the lead just before halftime. The Saints searched for a third after the break and duly found it through Bass Jr who swept home McNulty’s layoff.Peel reduced the deficit almost immediately when Gale fired home a half volley, his 200th senior goal for the club, but it proved too little too late as Geordies ran out 3-1 winners to move up to second in the table.
The win puts the Glencrutchery Road outfit up to second and above Peel, three points behind leaders Corinthians who have played two games more.
The Whites themselves registered a hard-fought 0-1 win at DHSOB thanks to Stephen Whitley tremendous free-kick.
At the foot of the standings, bottom side Ramsey registered only their second win of the season triumphing 2-3 at Douglas Athletic.
The result means the northerners are back to within four points of safety, having played a handful of games less than third-bottom Colby who lost 8-2 at St John’s on Friday evening.
St Mary’s and Rushen United won the day’s other two top-flight games, beating Douglas Royal and Braddan 4-0 respectively.
In JCK Division Two, a big 10-0 win for Castletown at Michael United means they stay top.
Alex Crawley continued his recent fine run of form for Town with his fifth hat-trick in a row as he bagged four goals. He was joined on the scoresheet by Richard Foden, Joel Callow, Noah Sansbury and Connor Garrett.Fellow promotion contenders Onchan and RYCOB slipped up.
The Os lost 4-1 at the hands of Foxdale, while Youthie were beaten 1-2 by in-form Marown.
Elsewhere Malew held off a strong comeback by hosts Gymns to triumph 3-4 at Tromode, while up the road at Noble’s Park Douglas and District beat Governor’s Athletic 3-1.
