The maiden first-team mid-week games of the campaign certainly threw up some interesting results.

Four of the teams tipped to challenge for the Canada Life Premier League’s title went head-to-head.

At Ballafletcher St Mary’s came from behind to beat Corinthians 3-2.

Sean Doyle’s towering header gave the Whites a 12th-minute lead before Jack McVey drew the two sides level from the penalty spot.

Corinthians were then presented with the chance to re-take the lead when referee James Turpin awarded his second penalty of the evening after Dan Simpson was upended in the box. Connor Gorman saw his resulting spot-kick turned away by the Saints’ Bulgarian goalkeeper Kiril Velev.

With only minutes of the opening 45 remaining, Frank Jones headed in Sam Gelling’s cross from the right to put the Bowl outfit ahead.

Gelling then turned provider again just shy of the hour mark when he again whipped in a cross from the right that Craig Murphy deftly flicked home.

With eight minutes left, Ste Whitley pulled a goal back for Corinthians, but the hosts couldn’t find a late leveller in the large chunk of injury time Turpin added on.

Goals either side of the break from Jack Saxon and Mike Williams ensured Rushen United beat Peel 2-0 to secured the first Old Firm bragging rights of the season.

Douglas Athletic sit top of the pile as they maintained their 100 per cent start of the season at Laxey’s expense.

Mark Wolfenden came back to haunt his former club, netting four goals in the Pinks’ 6-2 win at Glen Road. A brace from Mikey Callister completed the scoring for Craig Purvis’s charges.

DHSOB striker Matty Kent-Lloyd continued his fine start to the season with four goals as Old Boys triumphed 6-2 at Douglas Royal. Ryan Gartland and Martin King grabbed the victors’ other goals.

In the top-flight’s other goals on Wednesday, St John’s edged past Castletown 2-1.

In JCK Division Two, RYCOB won the northern derby with Ramsey 2-1 thanks to a Daniel Sherry and an own goal from former Youthie player Ryan Williamson.

Pulrose United were the evening’s big winners beating Gymns 10-1. Marc Priestnal netted four goals joining Owen Canipa (2), Craig Cowin, Joe Canipa, David Priestnal and Mark O’Neill in the rout.

Malew scored a notable victory over promotion rivals Foxdale. Summer signings Connor Dowell and Craig Dolman were on the scoresheet in a 3-1 win.

Union Mills beat Governor’s Athletic by the odd goal in seven despite Rob Howland and Sean Trayler seeing red.

Kyle Uren (2), Chris Kelly and Jack Murray were on target for the Millers.

Douglas and District also came out on top in an high-scoring 6-5 encounter with Ayre United. Rob McCowliff and Daniel Clague-Stewart both hit braces, while Daniel Kinley and Robbie Hay netted a goal apiece for D and D in the victory at Noble’s Park.

Onchan won the second tier’s other match, triumphing 5-2 at Colby.
