St George’s wrapped up a 13th top-flight crown in 15 seasons on Tuesday evening as they beat nearest rivals Cortinhians 2-1 at Ballafletcher.
Geordies headed into the fixture knowing that they only needed a solitary point from their remaining three league games to retain the silverware, but laid down a marker for May 19’s Hospital Cup final with a solid performance to beat the Whites for the first time this season.
After an even first half where both teams had chances, Chris Bass Sr’s side took the lead in the seventh minute of the second half when man of the match Sean Quaye headed in Ciaran McNulty’s corner from the right.
Ten minutes later the Glencrutchery Road side effectively wrapped up the victory when Furo Davies played in strike partner McNulty to finish off a Saints’ counter-attack with aplomb.
Corinthians pressed for a way back into the match and the title race, but this didn’t come until the 86th minute when Connor Gorman fired home a penalty to reduce the arrears.
Geordies safely navigated a mammoth spell of injury time to seal the three points and yet another piece of trophy for the Glencrutchery Road clubhouse.
Elsewhere, a brace from Lee Gale ensured Peel beat St John’s 2-0 at Mullen-e-Cloie. The result means that Steve Falconer’s men could yet pip Corinthians to second spot if they beat Braddan on Saturday.
Ramsey’s relegation from the Premier League was rubber stamped as they lost 4-1 at home to Rushen. After a tight first half goals from Alex Maitland, Mike Williams and Josh Kelly (2) ensured the Spaniards ended the league season on a high.
Laxey also scored a good win edging past DHSOB at Blackberry Lane. Former Old Boys attacker Sean Gavin and Dave Reynolds were on target for the Miners in their 2-1 win.
In JCK Division Two, Marown moved to within two points of second-place Foxdale thanks to a 6-0 win at Gymns. The Crosby side, who have two games in hand on Dale, warmed up nicely for Saturday’s potential title decider with current league leaders Castletown, thanks to goals from Sean Shimmin, Kevin Druggan, Joey Rothwell, Ashley Higginbotham, Ali Morris and the in-form Stuart Morris.
Onchan’s Paul Henry Gold Cup hopes were dashed as they were beaten 4-2 at Union Mills. On target for the Millers were Silver Boot contender Luke Booth, Colm Garrity, Chris Kelly and Kyle Uren.
Elsewhere in the second tier, Ayre United finished their first season back in Division Two with a 4-2 win over Douglas and District, while RYCOB confirmed a sixth-place finish with an 8-0 victory over Michael United.
