St Mary’s impressive season continued on Saturday afternoon, as the club’s second string beat Corinthians 4-1 at the Bowl to lift the Ascot Hotel Junior Cup.
Combination football’s showpiece event joins the Canada Life Premier League and Combi One silverware in the Saints’ trophy cabinet as the South Douglas outfit’s 125 year continues to be one to remember for its players and supporters.
Corinthians made a bright start to proceedings at a sun-kissed national stadium and took a 31st-minute lead when Aaron Beattie rifled in Jordan Cowin’s cut-back from the byline.
The cup favourites, however, weren’t behind for too long as Luke Booth steered in Jordan Cooper’s flick on eight minutes later.
A tight first-half ended level only for the Saints to stamp their authority on the game in the second 45.
Cooper headed his side in front three minutes after the interval before Man of the Match Jamie Skillen tapped in Booth’s low cross midway through the half to all but wrap up the silverware.
Copper put some further gloss on the scoreline eight minutes from the end when he reacted quickest to stab home after sub Nathan Halsall’s corner had come back off the Corinthians’ cross-bar.
A late sending off for replacement Blagoy Smilyanov for two bookings in quick succession was the only slight blemish on another good afternoon for the Saints.
The Bowl club’s attentions now turn back to the first team and Tuesday evening’s Hospital Cup semi-final at second-tier Foxdale.
