St Mary’s beat Laxey 2-1 to lift the Ascot Hotel Junior Cup on Saturday afternoon at the Bowl.

The Saints took a 15th-minute lead when Paul Doyle’s ambitious long-range shot was palmed into his own net by Laxey keeper Danny Mead.

The Miners drew level seven minutes later when Paul Riley nodded a ball into the Saints’ box past his own keeper.

A scrappy first half burst into life in the 34th minute when Mead was adjudged to have brought down Dean Spencer in the Laxey area.

Doyle stepped up to take the resulting penalty but Mead produced a tremendous save pushing Doyle’s spot-kick onto the post.

Mead’s save seemed to spur on his team-mates and they finished the half strongly drawing two good stops out of St Mary’s goalie Mathew Richards.

The second 45 was barely six minutes old when St Mary’s replacement Josh Molyneux broke free of the Miners’ backline before slotting past Mead.

Laxey pretty much set-up camp in the St Mary’s half after that, but some stoic defence from Riley, Doyle and skipper Adam Fick among others ensured the Saints held out to clinch the silverware.
