Lee Gale’s impressive return to football continued on Saturday as the Peel winger claimed his fifth Team of the Week appearance of the season.
The western attacker took a break from football last season in order to concentrate on mountain biking ahead of the 2017 NatWest Island Games in Gotland, Sweden.
Since making his return to the football pitch though, the Peel No.7 has been in scintillating form for the Douglas Road outfit and impressed once again on Saturday. He was Laxey’s chief tormentor as he helped himself to a brace as the Sunset City side comfortably saw off the challenge of the Miners 6-0 at Glen Road, thus claiming a place in the latest TotW midfield.
Also impressing in that game was his Peel team-mate Matty Skillicorn who, like Gale, bagged a couple of goals in an impressive all-round performance to keep the westerners in touch with Canada Life Premier League leaders Corinthians and earn his first TotW call-up this season.
Slotting in alongside the Peel duo in the three-man midfield is Ramsey’s Nick White who was yet another player to score a brace on Saturday as he helped the northerners claim what could turn out to be a vital point against relegation rivals Colby at Ballacloan.
While the midfield trio helped themselves to a total of six goals, the three-pronged attack went one better with seven.
Leading the way was Corinthians’ Sean Doyle and St George’s powerhouse Furo Davies who both found the back of the net three times each during their respective wins over Douglas Royal and St Mary’s.
Also getting on the scoresheet in that Ballafletcher derby was Stephen Whitley who opened the scoring inside the first five minutes and set his team on the way to a thumping 7-2 victory.
St John’s ended in-form Rushen United’s recent good run with a narrow 2-1 victory over the Spaniards at Croit Lowey where one of the stars of the show was Nick Leung.
The centre-back barely put a foot wrong and blunted the usually-prolific Rushen attack, therefore earning his second TotW appearance of the season.
Alongside him in the back four are two more players making their second appearances, as well as one player making his seasonal debut.
The latter player in question is DHSOB’s Iain Ramsay who had found a new lease of life being deployed as a left wing-back in a Conte-esque formation under Wayne Kennedy and he impressed against Douglas Athletic at the weekend.
Also standing out in that match at Springfield Road was his defensive cohort Tommy Miller who earned his second TotW call-up thanks to a typically strong showing in the heart of the Old Boys defence.
Completing the defensive quartet is Colby’s Ashley Blake who fired home a 74th minute equaliser to ensure a share of the points for the Moonlighters in their relegation battle away at Ramsey which finished 2-2.
Claiming the coveted number one shirt and goalkeeper gloves in the latest hypothetical XI is St John’s shot-stopper Damyan Petkov who was in fine form as the Saints claimed an impressive 2-1 victory away at high-flying Rushen United. Such was his display in that game that Petkov was named as the Player of the Day.
Impressing with the whistle once again was Andy Lodge who shone during the Ramsey v Colby contest at Ballacloan and thus earns his fourth Referee of the Week honours of the season already.
