St George’s remain on course for the Grand Slam after a dramatic victory over Rushen United on Saturday afternoon.

The newly-crowned Premier League champions were pushed all the way by the impressive Spaniards, with extra-time being needed to separate the sides at Glencrutchery Road.

That only tells half of the story though, as Rushen stunned the Saints in the first half by opening up a 2-0 lead through Jamie Johnston and Jack Saxon.

However, in typical Geordies fashion they refused to give up and reduced the deficit through Chris Bass Jr before Ciaran McNulty scored a dramatic last-gasp equaliser in the 90th minute to force extra time.

Buoyed by that late leveller, the Saints wasted little time in taking the lead once the additional 30 minutes got underway, Jack McVey’s deflected strike putting them 3-2 up inside the opening 40 seconds.

Bass then grabbed his second of the afternoon before substitute Jonny Quirk scrambled the ball home within seconds of coming off the bench, while Calum Morrissey netted in the final minute of extra-time to seal a 6-2 win and keep Geordies’ Grand Slam hopes alive.

The day’s other three FA Cup clashes all succumbed to the bad weather, as did the three scheduled Canada Life Premier League matches and the JCK Division Two clash between Pulrose United v Castletown.

A couple of games did still go ahead in the second division though, with leaders Douglas Royal romping to an 11-1 victory over Governor’s Athletic, a win which all but confirms their promotion to the top flight.

Despite being reduced to 10 men after the sending off of Gavin Gawne, goals from Chris Anderson, Kenny Cowin, James Clarke, Paul Whitley, Sean Traynor, James Halliday and Andrew Lancaster sealed the dominant win.

In the division’s other match, Gymns claimed their first league win since before Christmas after getting the better of RYCOB 3-1 in the north of the island.

Canada Life Combination One side St Mary’s emerged triumphant 8-4 in a high-scoring game at the Bowl. while in JCK Combination Two Michael United and Gymns played out a 1-1 draw at Balleira Road.
