With no fewer than 44 goals scored in the Premier League last Saturday, the latest Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week has a distinctly attacking feel to it.
Adopting a cavalier 4-3-3 formation, the forward line boasts a staggering 17 goals between them following a ruthless afternoon in the top flight.
Grabbing the lion’s share of those goals was Furo Davies who put Union Mills to the sword in style by netting seven times in Rushen United’s 13-0 win at Garey Mooar. Unsurprisingly, Davies was named as the player of the day.
Also chipping in with a five-goal haul for the Spaniards in that match was his team-mate Aaron Hawley who also takes his place up front.
Joining the southern duo in the attacking third is former Rushen star Danny Oram who was the star of the show for Ayre United as the Tangerines also hit double figures with a 10-0 hammering of Marown. Like Hawley, Oram found the back of the net no fewer than five times.
Another to impress in the latter match at the Memorial Playing Fields was Oram’s Ayre team-mate Shaun Kelly who takes his place in Team of the Week for the second week running thanks to a two-goal salvo against Marown.
Kelly narrowly edged out his Tangerines team-mate Johnny Shields for a place in the hypothetical XI after the latter enjoyed an excellent game in which he had a hand in most of the goals.
Slotting in alongside Kelly in a three-man midfield are Corinthians’ Danny Gerrard and St George’s man Conor Birch.
The latter scored the third goal in his side’s 3-1 win away at rivals Peel, pulling the strings in the heart of the Geordies midfield at Douglas Road.
Gerrard, operating in an advanced role, scored a first-half hat-trick for Corinthians as the Whites returned to form in ruthless fashion with a 9-0 victory over Ramsey.
Another to shine in that game at Ballafletcher was Adam Killey who excelled against the northerners, particularly in the first half as he kept his first clean sheet of the season.
Lining up in a four-man defence in front of Killey are players all from different clubs, namely DHSOB’s George Walmsley, St George’s stalwart Johnny Myers, RYCOB ace Graham Kennish and Rushen United talent Jack Snidal.
The latter enjoyed another fine game at the back for the Spaniards during their aforementioned demolition job of newly-promoted Union Mills, while Walsmley impressed in the heart of the Old Boys defence as the Blackberry Lane side stunned the previously unbeaten Laxey 4-0.
Kennish was man of the match for Youthie as they played out a 2-2 draw with Douglas Royal to claim a potentially vital point, while Myers rolled back the years with an impressive performance alongside Karl Clark in the Geordies defence as the Saints got the better of Peel.
Another to catch the eye of Eric Clague’s ratings panel in that match was Stuart Kneen who duly becomes the third different referee of the week already this season.
