There may have been a reduced fixture list on Saturday, but there was certainly no shortage of goals in the Canada Life Premier League.
No fewer than 33 goals were scored in the weekend’s three top flight games, and those in the latest Isle of Man Newspapers Team of the Week bagged 21 of them.
There was no doubting the main man on Saturday as Darren Hudgeon helped himself to no fewer than seven goals as St Mary’s demolished bottom-of-the-table Douglas Royal 15-0 at Ballafletcher.
As such, he earns his second TotW callup of the season and takes his place in a front three alongside St George’s frontman Furo Davies and former Geelong, Halifax and Altrincham striker Dan Hattersley.
Davies bagged a hat-trick as he help Geordies romp to a 12-0 thrashing of a depleted Douglas Athletic at Glencrutchery Road, while Hattersley - who guests on this week’s Manx Footy Podcast - continued his goalscoring return to Manx football with a brace for Rushen United as they saw off St John’s 5-1.
Also impressing for St George’s against DAFC were Joel Ibanez, Jay Skelcher-Maxwell and Chris Bass Jr who all line up alongside Craig Murphy in the Team of the Week midfield.
Ibanez impressed in the middle of the pitch for Geordies, while Skelcher-Maxwell and Bass Jr were both on the scoresheet for the champions, netting once and twice respectively against the Pinks.
Murphy also enjoyed a profitable game in front of goal for St Mary’s as he assisted Hudgeon’s aforementioned seven-goal haul with a hat-trick of his own against relegation candidates Royal.
Two more players to impress in that game at Ballafletcher were Josh Thomas and Jack McVey who slot into a three-man TotW defence alongside Rushen man Alex Maitland.
McVey also helped himself to a hat-trick for St Mary’s as his stellar start to life at the club continues unabated with his sixth Team of the Week appearance already.
Despite not getting on the scoresheet, Thomas was one of the stars of the show for the Saints as his tireless work ethic provided the platform for their success.
For the second week in a row - and third overall this season - Maitland’s performances at the back for Rushen caught the eye of the player ratings panel after an impressive showing against St John’s at Croit Lowey.
Donning the goalkeeper gloves this week is Kyle Logan after the usual St Mary’s combination keeper impressed as he kept a clean sheet against Royal.
Claiming the refereeing honours is Andy Lodge who performed well with the whistle during the Rushen v St John’s clash.
