Joe Walters has been crowned Canada Life Premier League Player of the Month for February and March.

The Laxey starlet has enjoyed an excellent season up front for the Miners and has been in sublime form of late, helping the Glen Road side pull off the Great Escape in the top flight relegation battle (see report in this week’s Manx Independent).

Only a couple of months ago, John Palmer’s men were staring down the barrell of relegation and facing life in JCK Division. However, a remarkable run of form - helped by the exploits of Walters - saw the Miners beat the likes of Rushen United, Castletown and DHSOB to secure their top flight survival.

In amidst those games, Walters scored in every match - including a brace against Old Boys - as he impressed Eric Clague’s player ratings panel, garnering a total of 10.5 points for the two months.

That meant he was three points clear of his nearest challenger, Castletown defender Joel Callow on 7.5.

Like Walters, Callow starred for the southerners as he helped the Stadium outfit safely seal their place at Manx football’s top table for another season.

Aside from that aforementional loss to Laxey and a defeat to heavyweights Corinthians, Callow shone for the Mets as they recorded wins over DHSOB, Douglas Royal and Marown.

One point behind him in the combined monthly standings was Corinthians star Dan Simpson and Callow’s Castletown team-mate Jack Camarda.

While the Whites have had a somewhat inconsistent league campaign, Simpson has enjoyed a stellar season for Corinthians and, with just a few weeks remaining, he remains fully embroiled in the battle for the overall Player of the Year honours with Jack McVey of St Mary’s and Peel’s Rhys Oates.

Camarda has been one of the standout young players of the season this year and he has been one of the reasons for Castletown’s successful bid to beat relegation.

Like Callow, he produced several big performances during February and March and, as a result, he has been named as the Young Player of the Month once again.
