Laxey boosted their faint hopes of survival in the Canada Life Premier League with a 2-0 win over Castletown on Saturday afternoon.

The Miners went into the game seven points adrift of Douglas Royal and top flight safety, knowing that anything other than a win would leave them on the verge of relegation to JCK Division Two.

However, they secured a big three points with goals either side of half-time at Glen Road. The hosts took the lead when Michael Fernandes’ free-kick hit the post and then inadvertently rebounded into the net off a Castletown player.

Castletown started the second half promisingly but the Miners grabbed the all-important second goal when the impressive Joe Walters fired home a great left-footed strike and they were able to see out the remainder of the match to clinch a potentially big three points.

Only a handful of games survived the weather, with just the one match in JCK Division Two but there was no shortage of goals as Colby romped to a 10-0 win at home to Governor’s Athletic.

Adam Fretwell and Carl Hickey both netted hat-tricks for the Moonlighters and were joined on the scoresheet by Luke Roberts, Marty Moore, Ste McIntosh and Mikey Thompson.

Only two combination games went ahead, both in Canada Life Combination One involving teams at the top.

League leaders St Mary’s were 4-1 at home at Douglas Athletic courtesy of goals from Luke Booth, Paddy Cooper, Mikey Hutton and Jamie Skillen, with Lee Ford netting the Pinks’ consolation.

That scoreline was replicated at Douglas Road where Peel triumphed over nine-man DHSOB thanks to a Billy Kennaugh brace plus goals from Aaron Costain and Tom Dowling. Mike Booth scored Old Boys’ consolation.
