Adam Long has been included in Notts County’s training squad ahead of a potential play-off campaign.

The Manx footballer, who came through the ranks at Union Mills and St George’s, is currently on loan from Wigan Athletic at the Nottingham-based team that competes in the National League.

The season was curtailed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and initially all results were declared null and void when Notts County were flying high in third place in the division.

But, after a backlash over that decision, the league is exploring the possibility of somewhat concluding the season.

The FA Council has agreed to extend the National League season in order that the play-offs can go ahead if possible during the Covid-19 crisis.

The National League is currently waiting for the English Football League - the Championship down to League Two - to decide the outcome in those divisions before confirming if the play-offs will go ahead or not.

If there is to be no relegation from League Two, then the play-offs will likely be scrapped, but the EFL is keen for promotions and relegations to stand.

Now, Notts County manager Neil Ardley has confirmed his training squad ahead of a potential return to competitive action in the coming weeks.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the club said: ’Neal Ardley has selected a 24-man training squad to prepare for a potential Vanarama National League play-off campaign, while several other first-team players have been informed that they will not be required to return and will subsequently be released upon the expiration of their contracts on June 30.

’With the regular season cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, leaving us in third place, we are waiting to find out how the sporting outcomes of the season will be decided.

’We remain hopeful of being involved in a play-off competition to determine who wins promotion to Sky Bet League Two and have been planning for this eventuality since our campaign was curtailed.

’While all out-of-contract players’ deals are due to expire on June 30, should play-offs take place it is anticipated that the contracts will remain valid until the season’s conclusion has been reached.

’A number of out-of-contract players, however, are either not eligible or do not feature in the manager’s play-off plans and, to give them the best possible chance of finding a new club for the 2020-21 season, they have today been informed in person that they will not be offered a new deal.

’We would like to thank all outgoing players for their service to the club and wish them the best of luck for the future.’

While Long’s loan deal was initially only for one month, the Manx teenager impressed and has had his stint at the club extended, therefore he could soon find himself challenging for promotion to League Two as his professional career gathers momentum.
