The third Isle of Man Newspapers Team of the Week of the fledgling football season features no fewer than 10 debutants.
The only player who has made an appearance already is Rushen United’s Aaron Hawley who slots into a four-man defence after impressing against St John’s in the Canada Life Premier League on Saturday.
After helping the Spaniards keep a clean sheet during their 3-0 win over the Saints, Hawley joins Jack McVey, Will Penhallurick and Daniel Lace in the TotW defence. McVey produced a sublime performance as he guided St George’s to a 3-1 victory against St Mary’s, thus maintaining his side’s 100 per cent winning start to the season and also clinching the Player of the Day honours in the process.
Penhallurick was Douglas Athletic’s star performer as they very nearly claimed a draw away at DHSOB, eventually succumbing to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Blackberry Lane despite Penhallurick’s stoic display at the heart of the Pinks’ defence.
No stranger to Team of the Week, Daniel Lace delivered a typically assured and productive performance at left-back for Peel as the westerners brushed aside Laxey 6-1 at Douglas Road, their first game back at their spiritual home in 16 months following problems with their pitch.
Just missing out on a place in the Team of the Week defence is Old Boys’ Luke Doherty plus St Mary’s star Alex Harrison.
Behind that formidable-looking back four and donning the goalkeeper gloves is Matthew Cregeen who shone for Colby during their 7-1 demolition of Ramsey at the Station Fields. The Moonlighters’ shot-stopper pulled off a superb early save to preserve his side’s lead and then also saved a penalty as the southerners claimed their first win of the season, edging out Douglas Athletic’s Matty Quirk for the TotW no1 jersey.
The midfield trio in the latest hypothetical XI features Corinthians duo Stephen Whitley and Dan Simpson, while there’s a welcome return for Lee Gale.
The latter man missed the majority of last season as he switched his attentions to cycling in the build-up to the summer’s NatWest Island Games in Sweden.
However, the livewire winger has made a flying return to the Peel line-up, taking his tally for the season to three goals thanks to a brace as he starred against Laxey on Saturday.
Whitley and Simpson were also both amongst the goals at the weekend as they shone during the Whites’ 5-0 win over Ballafletcher rivals Douglas Royal and therefore both earn their first TotW callups of the new season, just edging out James Murphy (St Mary’s) and Ciaran McNulty (St George’s).
The three-man frontline bagged six goals between them on Saturday, with one player in particular standing out. The striker in question is Colby youngster Daniel Lane who stole the show at the Station Fields as he helped himself to no fewer than four goals - plus winning a penalty - as the Moonlighters cruised past Ramsey 7-1.
Joining him up front are DHSOB’s Gary Quirk and Rushen United’s Jack Saxon who both played key roles in their teams picking up maximum points on Saturday.
Quirk grabbed the only goal of the game as Old Boys edged past DAFC at Blackberry Lane while Saxon helped himself to a goal as the Spaniards got the better of St John’s 3-0 at Mullen-e-Cloie.
Claiming the refereeing honours for the first time this season is the ever-popular Neshko Marinov who impressed with the whistle during the Ballafletcher derby between Corinthians and Douglas Royal.
