Union Mills produced one of the shocks of the round in the Craig’s Heartstrong Hospital Cup on Sunday evening.
The Millers, who were recently relegated from the Canada Life Premier League, stunned top flight high-fliers St Mary’s 5-2 at Garey Mooar.
Despite trailing 2-0 at half-time, in the second half Jordan Crawley led the way for the hosts with a brace and he was joined on the scoresheet by Karl Dobbin, Kyle Uren and Eoghan Sherrard.
There was also a shock on the cards in the north of the island where Div Two outfit Marown got the better of top flight side Ramsey, holding them to a goalless draw in 90 minutes before grabbing the only goal of extra-time to book their place in the next round.
Several other second division sides put up brave fights against Premier League opponents in the preliminary round.
Foxdale very nearly caused a major cupset by leading Laxey 1-0 at halftime thanks to Liam Cannan’s strike, but two second half goal sealed a hard-fought win for the hosts.
JCK Division Two leaders Douglas Royal also put up a fight away at DHSOB but Adam Adebiyi was in inspired form for the Blackberry Lane side, scoring twice and playing a part in an own goal as the hosts won 3-0.
Another side to go down fighting was Pulrose United who were edged out by the odd goal in five at home to Rushen United, while promotion hopefuls Braddan lost 3-0 at home to Douglas Athletic.
In an all-second division clash in the north of the island, goals from Andrew Bunce, Steven Grose and Marty Boyce sealed a 3-1 win for RYCOB at home to Malew.
Peel eased into the first round proper with a dominant 9-0 victory over JCK Division Two side Douglas and District at Noble’s Park.
Despite stubborn resistance by the underdogs early on, a quickfire hat-trick from Daniel Bell put Peel in command and further braces from Kerron Christian and Ryan Holdaway plus a single strike from Billy Kennaugh completed the win.
The clash between Corinthians and Castletown at Ballafletcher was postponed as the latter were unable to field a side.
