The seventh instalment of Isle of Man Newspapers’ 2020-21 Team of the Week has produced no fewer than eight debutants.

This means that 58 different players have now appeared in the hypothetical XI during the early stages of the new Canada Life Premier League season.

Amongst those earning their first TotW call-up of the campaign is Corinthians goalkeeper Matthew Quirk who was the standout performer in nets during the top-of-the-table clash at Rushen on Saturday, pulling off several important saves to ensure the game ended 1-1.

Another to impress at Croit Lowey was Alex Maitland who stood firm in the heart of the Spaniards’ defence in the face of a plethora of Corinthians attacks and duly claims his third TotW appearance of the season already.

Lining up alongside Maitland in a traditional four-man defence are Peel’s Luke Doherty, Laxey’s Dave Reynolds and Ramsey’s Luke Corlett.

Doherty’s return to the Peel side has helped inspire an upturn in form for the westerners after a difficult start to the season and his performance against Douglas Athletic made it back-to-back TotW selections.

Reynolds was one of Laxey’s top performers as the Miners dug deep to see off the spirited challenge of St John’s at Mullen-e-Coue, while Corlett starred for Ramsey as the northerners climbed up to seventh in the table with a 1-1 draw against Douglas Royal at Ballacloan.

There are three familiar faces in the Team of the Week midfield, with Frank Jones, Connor Birch and Robbie Ward all shining for their respective sides.

Jones and Ward went head-to-head at Blackberry Lane where a brace from the former helped St Mary’s record a 5-2 victory, despite the best efforts of Ward who rolled back the years with a good performance.

Jones’ former Saints team-mate Birch was also in fine fettle as he grabbed a goal to help new side St George’s record a 5-2 win of their own against Ayre United at Glencrutchery Road.

Also impressing in the latter match was Ben Wosser who earns his first Team of the Week call-up thanks to a goal-scoring display against the Tangerines to help Geordies close the gap at the top of the table.

Joining Wosser in a three-man attack is former St George’s striker Furo Davies and Douglas Royal’s Dominic McHarrie-Brennan.

Davies was a constant threat for Rushen during their aforementioned heavyweight clash with Corinthians and played a key role in Jamie Johnston’s equaliser for the Spaniards. McHarrie-Brennan, meanwhile, starred for Royal as they edged further clear of the relegation zone thanks to their 1-1 draw at Ramsey and also earns his first TotW call-up.

Narrowly missing out on the latest hypothetical XI were Will Penhallurick (DAFC), Harry Horbury (D. Royal), Tom Wood (Peel), Dylan Pickles (Ramsey), Jamie Callister (Ayre) and Callum Taggart (St John’s).
