There’s a couple of tasty-looking games in the Canada Life Premier League’s slimmed-down four-match fixture card on Saturday.
Topping the bill, that has been reduced by a couple of games because of call-ups to Isle of Man FA’s under-18 squad, is the match between Old Firm rivals Peel and Rushen United at Douglas Road.
Matches between these pair are always lively affairs as the opening day encounter the Spaniards edged 3-2 underlined.
Although this one won’t count toward Railway Cup qualification as it is technically a second-half of the season fixture, both sit side by side in the current standings in third and fourth respectively suggesting another tight game.
Peel will use the occasion to officially open the refurbished and renamed Terry Vincent Stand.
Corinthians remain the league leaders, largely because of the fact they’ve played four games more than second-placed St George’s.
The Whites host in-form Douglas Athletic, the latter heading into the match at Ballafletcher on the back of four straight wins.
When the pair met back in September, Corinthians edged the encounter 1-0.
Expect another close game this time around, especially with the Pinks’ tails up at the moment.
St George’s continue to play catch-up, having played only six league games so far.
The reigning champions will be hopeful of extending their 100 per cent record when they host St John’s at Glencrutchery Road.
The reverse fixture spawned a 6-2 victory for Geordies, but this one should be a bit closer with the Johnners having only conceded two in their last three games.
St Mary’s will be aiming to continue their recent revival when they travel south to Colby. The Bowl outfit have won both of their last two games since Alex Harrison took over as player-coach, putting 10 points between themselves and the relegation zone.
Third-bottom Colby have lost their last six games, finding the back of the net only twice. A battling performance in their last game against DAFC will give some encouragement, but expect a scoreline similar to the 5-1 win the Saints recorded in September.
