The 10th installment of this season’s Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week features four more debutants.

The halfway point of the 2020-21 Canada Life Premier League season is fast approaching but the table is still taking shape, with some shock results being produced.

One such standout scoreline took place last Saturday when Marown stunned St George’s 1-0 in Crosby and, as such, Dave Brew’s side has two representatives in the latest hypothetical XI.

Matty McQuarrie followed up his brother Alex’s star showing against Rushen the previous week by taking the plaudits against Geordies, helping the hosts keep their first clean sheet of the season.

Joining him in a traditional four-man defence are DHSOB’s Martin King, Rushen’s Alex Maitland and Tom Weir of St Mary’s.

Old Boys pulled off one of the other big results of the season so far when they hammered an understrength Laxey 6-1 at Glen Road where King was one of the stars of the show for the Blackberry Lane side.

Maitland has been a mainstay in this season’s Team of the Week, with his typically strong performance during the Spaniards’ 5-1 win at St John’s being rewarded with his sixth appearance of the campaign already.

Elsewhere, Weir earned his second cap thanks to a good display for St Mary’s during the reigning champions’ hard-fought 2-1 victory over Peel at the Bowl.

Also excelling at the national stadium was Kiril Velev in between the sticks for St Mary’s who kept the home side in the match with several key saves and subsequently dons the number one jersey in the latest TotW for the first time this season.

Another making his Team of the Week debut - this time overall - is 18-year-old Tom Hughes who starred for Marown during their aforementioned win against St George’s, giving everything for the cause as the Crosby side secured arguably the result of the season so far.

Joining Hughes in a three-man midfield are Corinthians’ Danny Gerrard and Old Boys star Robbie Ward.

Gerrard picks up his fourth TotW selection of the campaign thanks to a fine showing in the heart of the Whites midfield as they continued to set the pace at the top of the table courtesy of a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Ramsey at Ballafletcher.

Ward has been at the heart of Old Boys’ recent revival and he once again stole the show on Saturday as he grabbed a brace - including a goal of the season contender - to help his side stun Laxey at Glen Road.

Somewhat surprisingly only making his seasonal bow in this week’s selection is Corinthians star Dan Simpson who, like Gerrard, played a key role in the Whites’ aforementioned win over Ramsey and he joined Danny Oram and Furo Davies in a front three.

Both Oram and Davies were in scintillating form at the weekend, each scoring a hat-trick for Ayre United and Rushen United during their respective wins over Douglas Athletic and St John’s.

Oram was also named as the player of the day in the latest hypothetical XI.
