A couple of Colby’s FA Cup heroes have been included in Isle of Man Newspapers’ latest Team of the Week.
The Moonlighters stunned Premier League opponents Laxey with a dramatic 5-4 extra-time victory in the quarter-finals of the Friends Provident International-sponsored competition on Saturday.
Grabbing the lion’s share of the goals at the Station Fields was defender-turned-striker Carl Hickey who helped himself to a hat-trick, including the winning goal when penalties were looming.
The southerners will now face Premier League leaders St Mary’s in the semi-finals this weekend as they aim to reach the final for the first time in the club’s history.
The Saints were made to work hard for their place in the last four by DHSOB, with only Luke Booth’s late strike enough to send them through as 2-1 winners. The former Mills player scored a fine overhead kick to seal victory for his side and therefore he duly slots in alongside Hickey upfront in TotW.
Another player to impress at Blackberry Lane was Old Boys’ Sean Gavin who, despite ending up on the losing side, performed well to earn his place in a four-man midfield alongside Joel Ibanez, Harry Walters and Chris Bass Jr.
Like Gavin, Walters was on the wrong end of the scoreline at Colby but dictated the tempo in centre midfield, pulling the strings in the middle of the pitch as the Moonlighters struggled to contain him.
Geordies duo Ibanez and Bass Jr were both in fine scoring form at Ballafletcher as they each netted braces to help the Saints overcome 10-man Corinthians, both grabbing crucial goals just before half-time to send their side on the way to victory.
Claiming the man of the match honours in that contest, though, was their young defensive colleague Maleigh Freestone who was imperious throughout the game, snuffing out numerous Corinthians attacks, having a hand in the opening strike as well as helping himself to a goal in the second half.
The powerful full-back slots into a four-man defence alongside St Mary’s duo Karl Clark and Alex Harrison, as well as Colby’s Matt Costain.
Player/manager Harrison and Clark were in typically resolute form for the Saints as they produced top drawer performances at Blackberry Lane to see off the tricky challenge of Old Boys.
Likewise, Costain shone for the Moonlighters during their ’cupset’ over Laxey, defending well and then setting up the winning goal deep into extra-time to earn his place in the hypothetical XI.
Donning the goalkeeper gloves is Glenn Walker who was in fine fettle in between the sticks for St George’s, produced several good saves against his former side Corinthians, including a penalty and the rebound when the game was still goalless.
Picking up the refereeing honours this week is Peter Greenhill who did well during the match between DHSOB v St Mary’s despite being without linesmen.
