The second installment of this season’s Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week features a host of familiar faces, as well as one new name.
The player in question is Laxey’s 16-year-old goalkeeper Mason Prince who impressed on his debut for the Miners in the Canada Life Premier League last Saturday.
The talented teen was tasked with going up against a St Mary’s side expected by many to finish near the top of the table this season and, while he ended up on the losing side, Prince pulled off several good saves and caught the eye of Eric Clague’s player ratings panel.
Lining up in a formidable-looking back three in front of Prince are a trio of players who are no strangers to Team of the Week. Two of the players in question went head-to-head at Blackberry Lane where reigning champions St George’s edged past DHSOB by the odd goal in five.
Impressing in that game were Iain Ramsay and Johnny Myers for Old Boys and Geordies respectively. Ramsay produced a typically assured performance in the heart of the hosts’ defence which frustrated Geordies for large periods of the game, helping DHSOB to nearly claim three points before a late double snatched victory for the Saints.
It was much the same story for Myers who led from the back for Chris Bass Sr’s men and even had a hand in the winning goal scored by Furo Davies who grabbed a hat-trick.
Completing the back three is a player who actually started the day in midfield before a tactical reshuffle - caused by injury - forced his to switch to an unfamiliar right-back role.
The man in question is Corinthians’ Tom Callister who impressed in both positions for the Whites, opening the scoring against Peel with a fine curling effort early on before defending well later on as Peel hit back in the second half to salvage a 3-3 draw.
His Ballafletcher team-mate Dan Simpson was the star of the show in that match at Douglas Road as he tormented the Peel defence for large swathes of the game and played a key role in both of Stephen Whitley’s goals in the six-goal thriller.
As such, Simpson claims his second successive Team of the Week appearance this season and lines-up in a talented four-man midfield.
Also earning his second TotW call-up is Douglas Athletic’s Stephen Cowan who excelled against Laxey and Douglas Royal respectively.
Cowan has been one of Athletic’s star turns in the opening two games of the campaign, netting twice to help his side to wins over Old Boys and Royal to lift the Pinks up to the dizzy heights of the top of the table.
Completing the midfield quartet is St Mary’s man James Murphy and DHSOB star James McStay who were both named man of the match in their respective games. Murphy ran the show for St Mary’s as they battled to a narrow win over a spirited Laxey side at the national stadium, while McStay was the star man for Old Boys as they very nearly upset his former side Geordies at Blackberry Lane.
There’s no shortage of goals in the Team of the Week front three after they combined to score no fewer than eight goals in Saturday’s matches around the island.
Leading the way were Alex Holden and the aforementioned Furo Davies who both bagged trebles for their respective teams, while Rhys Oates scored twice at home to title favourites Corinthians.
Holden was undoubtedly the star of the show for St John’s and he produced a ruthless performance in front of goal to help the Saints see off newly-promoted Marown, the Island Games star bagging a hat-trick in a 5-2 victory at Mullen-e-Cloie.
Likewise, Davies claimed the matchball at Blackberry Lane, netting twice in the final quarter of an hour to complete a hat-trick as St George’s came from behind to win 3-2 at their near neighbours.
Oates has only been a Peel player for a matter of weeks but the former St John’s man has settled into life quickly at Douglas Road and kept the Corinthians defence honest as he netted a fine brace during the 3-3 draw in the top-of-the-table clash.
Claiming the Referee of the Week honours for the second time already this season is John McCallum who shone with the whistle during the clash between Douglas Athletic and Douglas Road at Springfield Road.
