A couple of weeks into the season and the Canada Life Premier League table is gradually beginning to take shape.
Last season’s top two, St George’s and Corinthians, have made their way to the head of the fledgling standings. Ominously for the rest of the division, Geordies already look to be firing on all cylinders after handing out a 14-0 hammering to Douglas Athletic last weekend.
Chris Bass Sr’s Glencrutchery Road side host St Mary’s this Saturday as they aim to stretch their 100 per cent start to four games.
Summer signing Phil Knox is off-island but Sean Quaye is back in contention after missing last week’s romp at Athletic. Johnny Myers remains side-lined with injury, while fellow St George’s stalwart Chris Bass Jr is still unavailable because of work commitments.
St Mary’s have faced Corinthians and Peel in their last two outings losing both. Their performance was improved in their 2-1 defeat at the hands of the westerners, but they will do well to get anything out of a Geordies side spearheaded by the in-form Furo Davies and Ciaran McNulty.
Corinthians will be hoping to maintain their own 100 per cent start to the term when they host near-neighbour Douglas Royal.
The Whites have yet to hit top gear this campaign, but have still managed to grind out the wins which is always the sign of a good side.
Corinthians will be firm favourites to pick up the points this weekend against a Royal side that is still finding its feet in the top-flight following promotion.
Competitive football returns to Peel this Saturday for the first time in 16 months.
The westerners host Laxey in the first game at Douglas Road since the end of the 2015-16 campaign after pitch problems.
Steve Falconer’s side will hope to mark their return to their home pitch with a win, but will be pushed all the way by Paul Callow’s exuberant Miners.
Another close game looks on the cards at Mullen-e-Cloie where St John’s host Rushen. Colby and Ramsey will also be a tight game as both go in search of points to beat the drop.
The final fixture sees DHSOB play only their second game of the season against Douglas Athletic.
