There’s a distinctly western feel to the latest instalment of Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week.

No fewer than seven players in the hypothetical XI hail from Peel or St John’s in the Friends Provident FA Cup special after last week’s quarter-finals.

There was certainly no shortage of goals during the three last-eight clashes that survived the inclement weather and went ahead last Wednesday and Saturday.

The front three in the latest TotW helped themselves to seven goals, with the majority of these being scored by Peel’s in-form winger Lee Gale who bagged a hat-trick for the Sunset City side as they thrashed Douglas Athletic 7-1 at Douglas Road.

At the same time at the Bowl, Dan Simpson was plundering a couple of goals himself as he inspired Corinthians to a hard-fought victory over St Mary’s at the national stadium.

One of the quarter-finals took place under the floodlights at Mullen-e-Cloie on Wednesday last week when a strong second-half performance helped St John’s see off the spirited challenge of JCK Division Two leaders Castletown.

One of the stars of the show in that game was Rhys Oates who helped himself to a brace to earn his place in Team of the Week. His Saints team-mate Johnny Holland also impressed during that match, providing the midfield steel to help Rick Holden’s men run out 6-2 winners and claim a place in the TotW central quartet.

Daniel Bell scored arguably the goal of the game as his Peel side proved too strong for DAFC in the west of the island and he slots into the midfield alongside St Mary’s player/manager Alex Harrison and Corinthians midfield dynamo Tom Callister.

Harrison was his side’s best player as the Saints went down fighting against the Premier League leaders at the Bowl, dragging his team level at the start of the second half was a superb curling strike from distance when playing in an advanced midfield role.

Callister also went close to scoring an excellent goal in that game when he hit the crossbar with a curling effort of his own in the second half, and he enjoyed a fine match as he helped the Whites run out 4-2 winners to book their place in the semi-finals against either Braddan or St George’s.

Callister’s Ballafletcher colleague Darren Cain also shone during that match at the national stadium, defending well plus supporting his team-mates in attack on numerous occasions and having a hand in one of the goals.

Cain lines up on the left-hand side of a three-man defence which also contains Peel’s Dominic McGreevy and St John’s Sam Ingham.

Both players were pillars of strength at the back for their respective sides as they ensured the western teams comfortably progressed to the semi-finals, with McGreevy even helping himself to a goal during Peel’s 7-1 win at home to DAFC.

Another player who stood out in that match at Douglas Road was talented young goalkeeper Owen Dawson who produced several important stops against the brave Pinks, including a crucial early save from Stephen Cowan when the game was still goalless.

Claiming the refereeing honours in the FA Cup Team of the Week special is James Turpin who shone with the whistle during Peel versus Douglas Athletic.
