There will be a strong sense of déjà vu this weekend when the quarter-finals of the ECAP-sponsored FA Cup take place on Saturday.
The draw has produced an eagerly-anticipated clash between Premier League heavyweights Peel and St Mary’s at Douglas Road in what is a repeat of last year’s final.
It also marks the second meeting in one week for the sides after they met in the top flight only last weekend in a match that was eventually abandoned in the second half because of the stormy weather conditions that descended on the island. That game was locked at 1-1 when the players walked off the pitch, suggesting that this next meeting should be another close affair between two of the leading lights in Manx football.
With last year’s final still fairly fresh in the memory, St Mary’s will be keen to avenge that 3-2 defeat after extra-time and will be fired up for this one. But Peel are without doubt the FA Cup specialists, having won the trophy a whopping 32 times, and so they will be confident.
Expect a close game which could go either way.
The other three quarter-finals appear to be - on paper at least - rather more one-sided as St George’s host Ramsey, Rushen entertain Douglas Royal and Corinthians travel to Division Two high-fliers Colby.
With manager Chris Bass Sr taking over as head coach of FC Isle of Man at the end of the season, Geordies will be desperate to end his remarkable trophy-laden era at the club with yet more silverware, so the Saints will certainly have one eye on the cup. Having already punished Ramsey 6-1 in the league this season, the Glencrutchery Road side will be firm favourites to progress.
The same goes for Rushen who also brushed aside Royal by that scoreline earlier in the campaign, but the Whites have improved of late and may prove a tougher nut to crack this time.
Colby and Corinthians will hopefully prove to be an entertaining battle, pitting two of the highest scoring teams against each other, but the visitors should prove too strong in this one if they guard against complacency.
Away from the cup, there is one league game taking place in Crosby where Marown host DHSOB needing points to move away from the relegation zone.
