Corinthians won the 20th Nedbank Floodlit Cup for a joint record seventh times, defeating Douglas Royal 2-0 after extra-time in Saturday evening’s final.

This was the ninth time the Ballafletcher duopoly have contested the final of this competition. With the match goal-less after 90 minutes, Lauren Christian netted the opening goal in the first half of extra-time, Casey Halsall making it 2-0 in the second half of the additional half-hour.

In winning, Corinthians became only the second team to retain the trophy. They have also become the first women’s team to have won a major trophy in every year of a decade including three trebles.

It is ironic that their latest cup triumph puts them on 19, the same number of major honours in the local women’s game as Douglas Royal.

A full match report will appear in this week’s Isle of Man Examiner, on sale Tuesday morning.
