The 20th Nedbank-sponsored Women’s Floodlit Cup final will yet again be an all-Ballafletcher affair, with Douglas Royal going up against rivals Corinthians.

It will also be a record ninth time that these two teams have met each other in the final.

The Ballafletcher duo safely navigated their passage through the semi-finals last Sunday by defeating Peel 2-0 and Laxey 7-2 respectively - see full reports on page 58.

Royal are currently the most successful side in the competition, winning it on seven occasions. This will also be their 15th appearance - and 12th consecutive - in the final, which are both also records.

Royal have proved they are made a stern stuff, winning their two previous finals by overturning two-goal deficits, and success this weekend will see the club become the most successful in women’s football by clinching their 20th piece of major silverware.

Six-time winners and currently holders Corinthians have been the dominant force over the past decade, during which time they have also completed three league and cup trebles.

Victory for them this weekend will see them equal the number of major honours with Royal (19). Should they win, they would also become only the second team to retain the trophy, a feat last achieved by Malew in 2004-05 and 2005-06.

Since the two clubs met in their first final back in 2007-08, Corinthians have won the trophy in each season ending in an even number, while Royal have done so in odd numbered seasons.

History will be made this weekend as it will be the first time a Floodlit Cup final has been played on a Saturday - they have either been on a Friday or Sunday previously.

One thing is for certain, it will be another action-packed final involving these two teams. Kick-off is at 5.30pm at the Bowl.
