The Manx football season was officially declared null and void three weeks ago, but who would have won the leagues’ respective silverware if it had continued?

The beauty of football, and sport in general, is its unpredictable nature meaning there is no exact science to determining the answer.

However, with most clubs having completed more than two thirds of their league games for the 2019-20 campaign, maths can be used to give us a fairly good indication as to who would have finished where.

The English Rugby Football Union used a similar formula to determine the final placings for its leagues below the Guinness Premiership, while the Jersey FA has asked its clubs this week whether they want to use a ’Points Per Game’ system to work out how its local leagues finish.

This would involve dividing clubs’ current points tallies by the number of matches played.

If this was applied to the Canada Life Premier League, pacesetters St Mary’s would have retained the title by the smallest of margins from St George’s and a Corinthians side that were second when the season was brought to an abrupt halt by the coronavirus pandemic.

Pulrose United have toiled for most of the term and a tally of only two points from 14 games would have seen them make a swift return to JCK Division Two.

There has not been much to choose between the second-tier’s top five on the pitch and that is borne out in the PPG statistics.

All of the top five had averaged more than two points a game this season, St John’s United sitting top of the pile with 2.5.

If PPG had been used to decide the final standings, Ayre United would have finished runners-up to the Johnners, clinching the division’s other promotion spot.

Union Mills and a Colby side that were top when Covid-19 halted play would have rounded out the top four.

Foxdale, who still had 12 league games to play, come next in the PPG standings ahead of Braddan and Onchan.

Governor’s Athletic’s tally of four points in 18 games means a PPG of only 0.22, a return that keeps them propping up the table.

l The combination leagues are a lot more clear cut with two runaway leaders in both.

Ramsey Youth Centre Old Boys had already mathematically clinched the JCK Combination Two title when the season was scrapped and their PPG of 2.89 is comfortably more than the 1.95 of predicted runners-up Douglas and District.

Corinthians’ 100 per cent record of 15 wins from 15 games gives them a PPG of 3 to lead the pack in Canada Life Combination One.

l The nine-team under-18 league only had a couple of games left to play.

Using PPG, league leaders St George’s would have clinched the title, a smidge ahead of Douglas Royal.

The pair were only separated by two points when the season ended and still had to play each other in what would have likely have been the final game of the division’s campaign.

l The women’s league was as close as some of its male equivalents.

Floodlit Cup winners Peel would be crowned champions using the PPG system, just ahead of Ballafletcher duo Douglas Royal and Corinthians.
