Paul Lowey and Shirley Price won the respective men’s and women’s Isle of Man Closed Golf Championships at Rowany Golf Club at the weekend.

Playing on his home course, Lowey edged past Daryl Callister in dramatic fashion to clinch his sixth island title, while Port St Mary’s Price lifting the trophy for the very first time.

The Grant Thornton-sponsored annual competition had begun a week earlier at the Port Erin course with qualifying being held over two days, followed by matchplay quarter-final and semi-final rounds during the course of the week.

Price and Lindsey Tickell enjoyed an intriguing and evenly-contested final which saw both players in front at various points, but in the end it was Price who prevailed 3 and 2 to clinch her maiden title.

The men’s final was filled with drama and went all the way to a play-off on the 37th hole. Lowey looked well on course to claim the title when he raced into a 6 up lead over the opening 18 holes, but Callister produced a stunning comeback to move within one shot of winning the championship.

The Mount Murray player was agonisingly close to lifting the trophy on the 36th but his putt lipped out and Lowey duly won the very next hole to claim his sixth title.
