The concluding day of the mixed hockey season provided great entertainment for the assembled crowd at the NSC with three cup finals.

First up was the MHA Mixed Bowl, which Vikings D were the clear favourites having won Rossborough Mixed Division Two without conceding a single goal all season.

Opposing side Castletown Cosney finished seventh out of eight teams in the league.

The form book went out of the window when talented athlete Ashleigh Lachenicht opened the scoring for Cosney, who enjoyed the best of the opening 10 minutes.

Vikings D were lethargic, struggling to get going against Cosney’s compact defence. That was until Josh Dougal stepped off the Vikings bench and scored one of the goals of the day, looping a shot over the stranded goalkeeper into the top corner to put his side level.

The goal certainly woke Vikings up and from that moment on they never looked liked relinquishing control. Dougal later grabbed a second to supplement the ones by Ash Osbourne and Andrew Harding.

With some superb hockey played by both sides, Cosney showed their worth defensively. Player of the match, as voted for by the two umpires, was Ava Melnick of Vikings.

Next up, it was time for Valkyrs C to stamp their authority on the MHA Plate.

Inside the first 15 minutes Valkyrs were two goals up against Bacchas Colts.

Despite Colts’ improvement this season, Valkyrs fielded an incredibly strong side that ultimately went on to win the match 6-2 and ensure they completed a league and plate double.

Chris Thomas scored yet another hat-trick this year, while Steph Cottier returned to fine goal-scoring form with a brace, and Dannie Betteridge closed the scoring for the westerners.

Two of Bacchas’ brilliant young players scored, notably Rhyse Williams with one of the nominations for goal of the day courtesy of a reverse-stick straight into the top corner of the goal leaving the ’keeper with no chance.

Bacchas can be proud of their efforts this season and their rate of progression is terrifying for the rest of the league going into men’s and women’s seasons next week.

Player of the match was given to the young Bacchas player Luca Parlato.

Before the MHA Cup final even started, Vikings A’s warm-up looked considerably more intense than Valkyrs A’s.

Both sides were missing players because of weddings and off-island trips, but it was Vikings that eventually broke through Valkyrs’ defence twice in fairly quick succession.

Valkyrs then managed to pull a goal back and were looking very competitive until shortly before half-time when Vikings managed to score a third.

The westerners had a choice - they could continue playing the way they were, challenging and being competitive (but losing the game 1-3), or they could go all-out-attack and win at all costs or lose 1-9.

Ultimately the latter occurred, but Valkyrs knew they had to try something different.

Both captains mentioned that they are now looking forward to the men’s and women’s seasons. Their respective results in mixed show that they can both have their men’s and women’s teams challenging for titles.

Player of the match went to a player someone described as a ’menace’ to Valkyrs defence, Scott Mason.
