Tyler Hannay became only the fourth Manx-born cyclist in history to go under 20 minutes for a 10-mile time trial on Sunday.

The 16-year-old has been on superb form since the relaxation of coronavirus restrictions and has consistently been knocking lumps off his personal best.

Seven days earlier he came agonisingly close to breaking the magical 20-minute barrier with a time of 20.01 in winning the 2020 Isle of Man championships - beating leading UK professional Chris Lawless (Ineos) in the process.

So a sub-20 was the Utmost IoM Junior Cycling Team rider’s focus on Sunday in round five of the Canada Life International-sponsored 10 league.

And he did it in style with a time of 19.57 to become the youngest Manxman to achieve the feat.

Peter Kennaugh remains the quickest on home soil at 19m 38.9s in 2014, with Mark Cavendish producing 19.48 the same day. Max Walker is third fastest at 19.51 on August 5 of this year, followed by Hannay on Sunday.

Leon Mazzone (Crimson Orientation Marketing RT) was next quickest on the day with a 20.40, followed by Jamie Fletcher (Ellan Vannin) - also in a private time trial - with 21.41.

Second of the league qualifiers was Rob Moneta (Ellan Vannin) in what is definitely a season’s best but also a likely lifetime PB of 21.12. A little way off clubmate Andrew Roche’s vet’s record of 20.34, Moneta is in terrific form, finishing well clear in the veteran ranks.

Matt Cooil (Utmost) was third of the league riders and second junior to Hannay, followed by senior Joel Newman (Manx Mountain Bike Club) and junior Corrin Leeming (Utmost).

Pick of the youths once again was Zac Walker (Team RL360) in 22.01, with nemesis Ralf Holden 15s adrift.

Anna Christian (Drops) was the fastest female in 22.46, only eight seconds off the IoM record she established in July 2017.

Behind her there was a close three-way contest for the runner-up slot (and best league finisher), with triathlete Lynsey Elliott (Manx Viking Wheelers) edging it in 26.14 from youth rider Nicola Quaye (RL360) by 11s and fellow youth Jess Pickavance next in 26.27.

l The final round of the league is on Sunday, October 18 over the same Jurby Road course.
