Joe Harris put up a good performance in Portugal to finish second in the javelin B final at the European Throwing Championship, losing out by a mere seven centimetres.

The Crosby joiner, 21, making his debut for Great Britain, powered the javelin to 74.11 metres at his first attempt, B final winner Mykola Kalyush (Lithuania) eclipsing that with his second throw.

Harris, who finished 10th overall, was the leading athlete from a Commonwealth Games nation.

The result leaves the JR Moore Trust Scholarship recipient in a confident mood ahead of the departure for the Gold Coast Games next week.
