Will Draper has narrowly missed out on the opportunity to medal in two separate sports at this week’s Island Games in Gibraltar.
Having won individual silver and team bronze in Sunday’s triathlon, the talented all-rounder finished fourth in Wednesday evening’s 5km around the Lathbury Sports Complex track in a time of 15 min 43.05 sec which was 14 seconds down on third-place man and steeplechase champion Daniel Eckersley (Isle of Wight).
Jersey’s Elliot Dorey ended home favourite Harvey Dixon’s hopes of making it three Island Games titles in a row. It was the Channel Island’s maiden gold at the distance.
Draper’s fellow Manxie Stephen Garrett was sixth of the 15 finishers.
Colby’s Megan Lockwood finished joint sixth in the women’s high jump after clearing 1.45.
Saaremaa’s Teele Treiel claimed gold, the 2015 champion jumping 1.74 on another blustery night at the exposed athletics’ venue.
In the men’s long jump Lockwood’s fellow Games debutant, Keoghan Taylor, finished eighth in the 11-man long jump final.
The Douglas teenager's best effort was 6.65m as Ross Jeffs became the first Jersey athlete to win a long jump gold after reaching 7.23m.
