Wet and windy conditions led to all scheduled hockey matches on the all-weather pitches in Peel and Ramsey being postponed on Saturday.

There were also issues with the high winds at Castle Rushen High School, leading to the Castletown B versus Harlequins B fixture being abandoned about 50 minutes in and the postponement of Castletown A v Vikings C.

After so much time off over the festive period, followed by the circuit-breaker lockdown and then snow, players are champing at the bit to get back to regular action.

Despite Saturday’s weather, Bacchas A convincingly beat a Vikings A side fresh-out-of-ideas to take home the Rossborough Men’s Premier League title.

Vikings were 0-1 down at half-time but remained hopeful they would still come away with the win.

But Bacchas upped their tempo to extinguish any hopes Vikings may have had. While the latter side will now turn their attention to sealing second place in the league, Bacchas can celebrate.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Bacchas B narrowly overcame a rejuvenated Harlequins A side by a single strike in a seven-goal thriller.

Despite Harlequins struggling this season, they have shown that they have a good performance or two in them and, with the young players gaining more experience, it would be no surprise if they managed to seal a point or two before the season is done.

The other games in the top flight were all postponed because of water-logged pitches, meaning Valkyrs A have to be patient in their quest to seal second place.

In Rossborough Women’s Premier League, Vikings were able to extend their lead to five points following their win over Castletown A, who despite good form in the first half of the season have faltered since the league split.

Valkyrs A were unable to make headway when their game against Bacchas A was postponed as a result of a lake appearing in the middle of the QEII pitch.

But the westerners’ B team defied pundits’ expectations of their goal-scoring form and bagged eight against Saracens who failed to score.

Vikings will have to wait another week to confirm their final credentials, but it seems a question of when and not if they will retain the title.

Rossborough Women’s Division One saw two games survive the wet weather, with Vikings C scoring six without reply against Bacchas C to move them into fourth place.

They have one game in hand on Castletown B, the team below them, who despite their good defensive unit were unable to stop the Bacchas B attack.

The Tromode second string are now level on points with Vikings B at the top of the table and, with a head-to-head record favouring Vikings, this battle could go down to the wire.

All Rossborough Men’s Division One games were lost to the weather. Castletown B against Harlequins B was finely balanced with Quins leading 2-1 before the wind picked up and started pushing the goalposts around.

This led to the match being abandoned and the following game between Castletown A and Vikings C also postponed.
