Lincoln’s Ivan Lintin remains in a critical condition in Noble’s Hospital following a four-bike crash in the closing stages of the Southern 100 on Thursday afternoon.

The tragedy resulted in the death of James Cowton of Driffield who crashed on the exit from Stadium Corner on the approach to Castletown Corner in the 600cc Challenge race, shortly before 5pm.

Two other riders also hit the wreckage and crashed, but escaped with less serious injuries in the incident.

Jamie Coward suffered broken fingers and a minor back injury, while double Manx Grand Prix winner Mikey Evans had arm and leg injuries.

Lintin and Cowton had both been on the podium in the winners’ enclosure earlier in the day.

Southern 100 Racing extended sincere condolences to family, relatives and friends of James Cowton at this very sad time.

The organisers are carrying out a full investigation in conjunction with Isle of Man Constabulary into the circumstances of the incident on behalf of the Coroner of Inquests.
