Peter Kennaugh and Amelia Sharpe have been named in Great Britain’s team which will tackle the 2018 UCI World Road Race Championships in Innsbruck, Austria.

Kennaugh forms part of an eight-strong team for the elite men’s road race alongside Hugh Carthy, Tao Geoghegan Hart, James Knox, former Castletown resident Ian Stannard, Connor Swift, Adam Yates and Simon Yates.

The race takes place on Sunday, September 30 over a 258.5-kilometre route from Kufstein to Innsbruck, featuring six laps of tricky undulating terrain.

It’s been a frustrating year for Kennaugh who was forced to sit out a large part of the season but has ridden back into a bit of form over the last few weeks.

After decent rides at the Deutschland Tour, Brussels Cycling Classic and the GP de Fourmies / La Voix du Nord, the BORA Hansgrohe star delivered two strong performances in the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal one-day races, very nearly claiming a superb solo victory in the former when he broke away but was caught within sight of the finishing line.

Amelia Sharpe has been included in the GB team for the Junior Women’s Road Race which takes place two weeks’ today on Thursday, September 27.

Sharpe will line up alongside Elynor Backstedt, Pfeiffer Georgi, Amy Monkhouse and April Tacey for the 70.2km race from Alpbachtal Seenland to Innsbruck

Amelia, 17, has enjoyed a superb year representing Liv Halo Cycles, culminating in being crowned Junior Women’s National Road Race champion in July. She also goes into the world champs on good form having excelled in the Watersley Ladies Challenge in the Netherlands last week, most notably finishing a superb second on stage two in Windraak on her way to finishing 18th overall and ninth in the youth class.
