Manx boxer Mathew ’Magic’ Rennie returns to the ring at Greenbank Sports Academy in Liverpool to take on Blackburn’s Naheem Chaudhry this weekend.

Commonwealth Youth Games silver medallist Rennie - who turned pro last year - will be in action on Merseyside on Saturday night.

Black Flash Promotions will host the 13-fight event in association with Queensbury Promotions, the company of infamous boxing promoter Frank Warren.

The latter has promoted and managed some of the best world champion and top-ranked fighters, including names such as Tyson Fury and Frank Bruno.

Rennie’s last welterweight fight at Bowlers Exhibition Centre was scheduled to take place in June but was called off, leaving the Manxman with an unplanned summer break.

Despite that, he has been back training hard, both physically and mentally, ahead of this weekend’s match.

’After the cancelled Bowlers Exhibition Centre fight, I’ve spent the summer recharging my batteries and resting,’ said Rennie.

’Training has been going well and has been the toughest mental test yet, but it’s been a great learning curve.

’I have been sparring with top welterweight Liam Taylor in Manchester, who is challenging for the British title in November this year, and I have been sparring with some top prospects in Liverpool and Manchester at the Ricky Hatton Boxing Academy.’

Behind the Isle of Man fighter being at optimal peak performance is a team of professionals, including British super-flyweight champion Paul Edwards and chief coach and fight planner Tommy Smith.

Loughborough University alumna and former Chelsea women’s footballer Alice Ashe has managed his nutritional support from her base at Cycle 360 in the Isle of Man Business Park.

The 12-month training plan includes both cardio and strength training, and Rennie undergoes intense 10-week preparations for each fight combining base strength exercises and varied intensity training at Limitless Fitness in Liverpool.

The facility is a boxing-centric physical fitness studio owned by fellow boxer Kurt Wiggins.

Speaking of Saturday’s opponent, Rennie commented: ’Naheem has had 57 fights and hasn’t won many, but he can be an awkward opponent to parry and has never been stopped.

’We have been working on a few different ways on how best to manage his boxing style. He’s a very tough and durable fighter, but I’m hoping to stay focused and have a good four rounds to impress the crowd.’

After this weekend, Mathew’s next fight will be in Hull at the Bonus Arena on October 26 looking to build on his past experiences in the ring ahead of his 2020-2021 schedule, where he hopes to increase his rounds and aim for some prestigious title shots.

His future schedule will see Mathew head to Marbella to train at MTK Global with ex-amateur bantamweight boxer Blane Hyland, as the latter continues preparations for his professional debut.

’Training in Marbella will enable me to meet new people, and assist with a different kind of exposure with the boxing industry.’

l Tickets for Rennie’s fight this Saturday are priced at £40 and can be bought directly from Mathew by emailing [email protected] or through his Mathew Magic Rennie Facebook page.
