There was an excellent attendance of spectators for Peel beachcross on what should have been the evening before the Senior MGP.
With a perfect low tide, the only constraint was the rapidly fading light, so the Ramsey MCC event actually got under way a few minutes earlier than scheduled.
World Enduro star Daniel McCanney and 2019 British Youth MX Champion Max Ingham put on a great display of riding in their battle for the main solo honours, but the quality of riding in general was very good.
Ingham grabbed the holeshot in race one on his 450 Yamaha and managed to hold onto the lead throughout the six laps.
There was indeed a hole shot right through the radiator of McCanney’s 450 Honda and the motor was over-heating in the closing stages. All-rounders, Jamie and Ryan Cringle, finished third and fourth after Grant Thomson retired with a mechanical issue on lap four.
After a quick change of radiator, McCanney was back on the boil in the second moto, but a rare fall mid-race saw him lose the tow, and with it his chances of claiming the overall honours.
He pushed extremely hard in the last race, but the overall honours went to 19-year-old Ingham for the second year in succession.
Matthew Corkill won the first Group B race from Gordon Rice and Tom Cain, but Alex Bottomley, after a spill in that race, bounced back strongly to win both the remaining races on a 250 Husqvarna that he was sharing with his father Simon.
With no one particularly consistent, Bottomley squeaked it by six points from Corkill and Rice at the close of the night.
The quad bike class belonged to Kane Hall, who won all three races in some style.
Tom Cannell was the best of the rest, finishing runner-up in each, with Ste Ennett also consistent in third.
Flag and bucket collections on the beach and promenade raised £725 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, added to which was a donation back from the club and kind individual donations from Danny McCanney, Matthew Corkill and Kane Hall.
The grand total then came to £935, the highest sum raised by Peel Lifeboat all year.
l A big thank you to Peel Town Commissioners, Ian Jones of Frank Jones Services, Barry Horne of CB Horne Seafood processors and Stuart Blackley of GF Fork Trucks for their support; plus the medical services and the Department for Enterprise.
