Peter Kennaugh produced an excellent performance to finish third in the Tre Valli Varesine one-day race on Tuesday.
The Italian autumn classic took the riders over 212 kilometres from Saronno to Varese and much of the race was led by a breakaway of five riders.
But with 50km remaining several riders, including Kennaugh’s BORA-hansgrohe team-mates Rafal Majka and Emanuel Buchmann, were able to bridge the gap.
As part of a 14-man group, the two riders rode at the head of the race until they were caught with 28km remaining.
The following kilometres were characterised by a series of attacks, and Kennaugh and Buchmann were able to put themselves at the head of the race.
The Manxman led heading into the final 4km but was soon reeled back in and it all came down to a sprint from a reduced group on the slightly downhill finishing straight.
Toms Skujins emerged victorious ahead of Frenchman Thibaut Pinot, while Kennaugh produced a fine effort to clinch the final step on the podium.
The Manxman followed this up by successfully completing Wednesday’s Milano-Torino one-day race in the same country.
He is now due to travel to Asia where he competes in the two-day Hammer Hong Kong over the weekend followed by the six-stage Gree-Tour of Guangxi in China between October 16-21.
