A stiff north-easterly breeze did not stop Corrin Leeming producing a long course record in the opening round of Dave Phillips Memorial series.
Conditions were generally good, but the headwind on parts of the promenade and the more exposed parts of the Headlands proved quite tough for many.
Not so Leeming, who completed the 6km two-lapper in an impressive 21min 31sec.
The 19-year-old Loughborough University student clearly meant business from the off and continued his early-season form after his outstanding run in the Easter Festival 10km on Good Friday.
There were other notable performances behind him, particularly from Northern AC’s Lucas Stennett who ran a fine 22.56 to finish runner-up. Dave Bignell also ran well to complete the top three.
His fellow Western AC runner, Dawn Atherton, put in a solid performance and was rewarded with being fastest female in a time of 28.16.
It was good to see Joe Reid, the ex-GB international and IoM Commonwealth Games 800m runner, stretching his legs and running a respectable 26m 36s.
In the one lap (3km), Harry Stennett caught the eye and has only recently moved up an age group, running a swift 12.29.
Madison McMullan ran strongly in the conditions for second place in 13.30. Fastest woman on the night was Joanne Schade, who appeared to make light work of it all, especially as she only competed in the Manchester marathon less than three weeks ago, smashing her personal best by 12 minutes for good measure over the 26 miles.
Gail Sheeley also ran well for fourth position and best over-50.
In the under-11 race on the promenade, over approximately one mile, Eve Martin ran a very quick 6m 54s to beat Billy McMullan, with Bella Quaye completing the top three in 7.27.
Only one under-nine ran (over approximately 800 metres), but Leighton Curphey did well to clock 3m 30s having been second overall behind Eve Martin at the point that he stopped.
l Thanks to the marshals, timekeepers and recorders. The next Dave Phillips race is on Friday, May 20.
