Conditions were good at Jurby for the second race of the season in the Bikestyle Handicap Series last Thursday.
The handicaps were stretched for the faster riders - unfortunately a little too much - but the race was a good one and ended with a 25-strong bunch finish.
The long markers worked well together with Rob Holden providing advice and guidance. The group worked well with Kieran Murray, Richard Bregazzi and Brayden Roche mopping up the primes along the way. Although the long markers were working well, it was the middle markers who had chance to claim the spoils after finally making contact with the lead group at the start of lap four.
The combined groups stayed away to contest the finale but unfortunately the sprint was disrupted as Richie Mcauliffe and Darren Murphy hit the deck with 100 metres to go.
Mcauliffe ended up as a customer for the St John Ambulance team with a broken collarbone, but remained upbeat and is looking forward to getting back on the bike.
Ian Skillicorn took the win by a couple of bike lengths from Matt Oakes, with Gareth Gawne slotting into third. Old stager Richard Fletcher in fourth held off young guns Nathan Slack and Nick Kissack who completed the top six.
The women were headed by reigning series champion Eleanor Davies ahead of Jess Carridge, with Emily Looker taking third spot - all riders finished in the same time as the winner. Russell Cowin won the spot prize for 49th position at the finish.
After these results, Kissack now heads the series standings with Carridge the leading lady. It’s great to see the speed increasing year on year - the general level of fitness has increased considerably over the years.
Thanks go to all drivers, helpers, St John Ambulance, police and Bikestyle. The series takes a break for TT and resumes on Thursday, June 13.
