Mansfield brothers Ben and Tom Birchall smashed the lap record on their way to securing a dominant flag-to-flag win in Monday afternoon’s Sure Sidecar TT.

The Birchalls broke the previous standard, which they set last year, by two seconds with a lap of 117.119mph (19 minutes 19.746 seconds) on their second circuit of the three-lap race.

The pair claimed their fifth TT win by 25.669 seconds from John Holden and Manx passenger Lee Cain.

Cain’s fellow Manxies Dave Molyneux and Dan Sayle managed to hang on to third to grab Moly’s 30th podium despite the latter suffering suspected broken ribs during the course of the race.

Alan Founds and Jake Lowther, who had threatened to overhaul Moly and Sayle, finished 5.653 seconds down in fourth with Tim Reeves and new passenger Mark Wilkes fifth.

Completing the top six as the weather closed in were Peter Founds and Jevan Walmsley.

Braddan’s Karl Bennett and new French passenger Maxime Vasseur finished ninth.
